Babu Owino Criticizes Education Ministry, Wants Junior Secondary Audit Done
Babu Owino, the Embakasi East Member of Parliament, has criticized the government’s handling of the education sector, particularly the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).
Owino has called for an audit of the CBC, specifically in Junior Secondary School (JSS), to determine the number of enrolled students, those who did not enroll, and the government’s plans to ensure a 100% transition rate.
In a press conference on Wednesday, Owino demanded that President William Ruto provide an update on the state of the education sector.
He also asked how many learners have reported to JSS, where the missing students have gone, and the number of teachers deployed to manage the transition, as many schools are struggling with a shortage.
Owino’s concerns come amid reports that many learners who have reported to JSS are not learning because there are not enough teachers.
Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu recently toured Kisii County and announced that 96% of learners have reported to school, despite the fact that learning has not fully taken off in some public JSSs due to various challenges such as lack of funding, adequate textbooks, and a poor pupil-to-teacher ratio.
Owino’s criticism highlights the need for the government to address the challenges facing the education sector, particularly in the implementation of the CBC.
An audit of the CBC in JSS will provide valuable information on the number of students enrolled, the number of teachers deployed, and the challenges that need to be addressed to ensure a successful transition.
The government must take urgent steps to address the shortage of teachers in JSS, provide adequate funding and resources for the implementation of the CBC, and ensure that all learners have access to quality education.
It is essential to address these challenges to achieve the government’s goal of a 100% transition rate and provide all learners with the skills and knowledge needed for success in the future.
