Azimio Demands KUCCPS Course Application & University Fees Review
Azimio is demanding that the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) provide KCSE 2022 candidates with another opportunity to apply to universities and colleges.
Opiyo Wandayi, leader of the Minority Party in the National Assembly, argued that KUCCPS should open up another review of courses in order to provide a second chance to more than 600,000 students who missed the opportunity.
“The cost of application that was placed at Sh1,500 per application for a young person to be placed in a college, coupled with a lack of information about the process, is now threatening the future of over half a million young people,” he said.
Wandayi added in a statement that Kenyans have observed with astonishment and dismay the excessive fees and fee structures at Kenyan public universities.
The government has acknowledged that approximately 600,000 of the 881,416 students who took the KCSE exams in 2022 did not apply to universities or colleges.
“The new classification of citizens has cunningly placed very few (29 percent) in the category of vulnerable and very needy who will qualify for 100 percent support in scholarships and loans, leaving the majority to struggle with huge student loans and parental burdens,” Wandayi said.
According to him, the purported new financing model has fraudulently shifted the burden of funding college education from the government to parents and students through expensive loans.
“It is official that those who do not fall under vulnerable and needy categories will meet up to 62 percent of the cost of their studies, as the government conveniently carries 28 percent of the cost,” he said.
Under the previous model, the government was responsible for 80 percent of college tuition, while parents were responsible for 20 percent.
