University Fraternity Celebrate Life of Literary Luminary Prof. Micere Githae Mugo

Professor Micere Githae Mugo was lauded as a natural scholar who made significant contributions to the literary arts and human rights during her lifetime.


In a memorial service held in her honor by the University of Nairobi, the deceased scholar and author was lauded as a trailblazer who ventured to speak out against oppressive political regimes and human rights abuses.

Prof. Micere Mugo passed away on June 30, at the age of 80, after a lengthy battle with illness.

Professor Micere Mugo was a pioneer in numerous fields. She progressed through the ranks to become the country’s first female dean of the University of Nairobi’s faculty of arts. In 1982, due to her vehement criticism of the government, she resigned from her position and went into exile.

In accordance with her Ubuntu philosophy, she nonetheless established a fund to pay the school fees of needy but brilliant students, as she is a true educationist at heart.

Micere Mugo’s family established a fund after the death of her daughter to assist Kenyans from disadvantaged backgrounds in gaining access to university and even fundamental education.

The deceased professor was an accomplished writer, poet, and playwright, and at her memorial service, her colleagues employed lyricism and poetry to pay tribute to her.

Her family remembers her as a compassionate and kind person who never met an unapproachable stranger.

Professor Micere Githae Mugo was a literature professor at Syracuse University who was renowned for her tenacity as a human rights advocate, distinguished scholar, and esteemed author.

She passed away on June 30, at the age of 80, after a long battle with cancer.
