5 Pupils Perish in School Bus Accident near Webuye
Saturday evening, five students from Ebenezer Academy in Busia County perished after their school bus was involved in an accident.
The accident occurred at Kaburengu, near the town of Webuye, at 7:30 p.m., according to a police report lodged at the Matete police station in Kakamega county.
According to reports, the school bus was struck by a Mercedes-Benz traveling from Eldoret to Webuye town.
The Mercedes-Benz motorist fled the scene, and the police have launched a manhunt.
Four females and one male perished on the spot.
Their carcasses have been transferred to the mortuary at the Webuye County Hospital.
“It happened that an unknown driver who escaped from the scene was driving a Mercedes Benz from Eldoret direction heading towards Webuye and while at Chimoi, he lost control of the said vehicle ramming into the bus,” police said.
Police said that as a result of the collision, four girls and one boy were fatally injured. The school bus driver, aged 48, perished on the spot as well.
Six additional students were injured and are being treated at the Webuye County Hospital.
Two educators were also injured and are receiving treatment at a hospital.
“The bodies of the deceased pupils have been removed to Webuye Hospital mortuary pending identification and postmortem. Efforts are underway to arrest the run-away driver,” police said.
