Students Killed, Others Injured in Evening Road Accident in Salgaa
On Saturday evening, two pupils and the driver of the matatu were killed in a road accident in the Salgaa region along the Nakuru-Eldoret highway.
According to eyewitnesses, the matatu was traveling from Nakuru to Eldoret when collided with the truck.
According to reports, the PSV was overloaded with 15 passengers, including several students returning home after the end of their school’s half-term holiday.
Other accident victims were promptly moved to various hospitals in the county of Nakuru for treatment and admission.
The matatu’s severely damaged wreckage was towed to the side of the road while traffic marshals moved to prevent a traffic jam.
With an influx of road users accessing various cities via the highway, police were instructed to increase enforcement and apprehend violating motorists.
Motorists were cautioned against driving recklessly, particularly with the Safari Rally taking place in Naivasha and students leaving for their midterm breaks.
The Ministry of Education rescheduled midterms on Thursday, June 22. Students were permitted to return home on June 27, 2023, and will not return until July 1, 2023.
Prior to the adjustments, parents had planned to receive their children on Thursday, June 29.
Between January and May of 2023, the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) recorded 1,670 traffic-related fatalities.
According to the NTSA, there were 77 fewer fatalities than in the same period of 2022 (1,756).
571 of the 1,679 fatalities involved pedestrians, followed by 449 involving motorcyclists, 323 involving passengers, and 149 involving drivers.
To reduce road accidents, the NTSA suggested increasing the number of traffic police officers, enhancing road infrastructure, and increasing public awareness.
