48-year-old Kimathi Primary School face Demolition for Shopping Mall
Private developer threatens to demolish the aging Kimathi Primary school for a retail mall.
A private developer threatens to demolish the 48-year-old Kimathi Primary School in Kamukunji Constituency in order to make way for a shopping mall and community halls, placing the future of the institution in jeopardy.
“The evacuation notice stated that the school was occupying the land illegally,” the authorities reported.
Since 1975, when it was founded by the city council, the school has been administered by the county government, a span of more than 48 years.
Patrick Mwangi Macharia, a member of the Bahati County Assembly, argued vehemently that the land legally belonged to the school, refuting the claim made in the evacuation notice.
“I have spoken to my boss, Governor Sakaja, and we won’t allow cartels to destroy this school. We want to give our students hope; hence, the school cannot be taken down,” Macharia said while standing in front of the school’s gate.
Macharia added that the land belonged to the County of Nairobi.
Macharia disclosed that he was present at the location the previous night when they proceeded to dismantle the notice that had been affixed to the gate.
He expressed strong disapproval of the individual’s actions, asserting that placing a falsified notice within a school environment is entirely unacceptable
Commander of the Buruburu Sub-County Police, Francis Kamau, stated that the matter is being investigated.
The notice from the private developer stated that they lawfully owned the parcel of land where the school is located and possessed official National Land Commission documentation.
