In 2023, junior high schools will offer 23 subjects to the inaugural seventh-grade class.
Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD), students will choose from 14 subjects, with Mathematics and English being required.
Additional compulsory subjects were Kiswahili, Integrated Science, Health Education, Pre-Technical Studies, Social Studies, Business Studies, Agriculture, Life Skills Education, and sports and physical education.
Included on the compulsory list were religious studies, including Christian Religious Education (CRE), Islamic Religious Education (IRE), and Hindu Studies.
Nevertheless, it was indicated that students would only select one option from the religious group.
The Competency-Based curriculum (CBC) offered Arabic, Computer science, French, German, Home science, Indigenous Languages, Mandarin, Performing arts, and Visual arts as elective subjects.
“Grade 7 is the first Junior Secondary School (JSS) level in the new education structure.
"The main feature of this level is a broad curriculum for the learner to explore talents, interests and abilities before selection of pathways and tracks at the Senior Secondary education level,” read the document in part.
Additionally, KICD featured a variety of weekly lessons to be taught.
Math and English were given five courses each week, while Kiswahili and science received four.
Religious and elective subjects received three lessons apiece, while physical education received two.
Life Skills education, on the other hand, was planned for one lesson every week.
Grade Six students, who appeared for the national tests in November, are set to move to Junior Secondary in January 2023.
According to President William Ruto’s decree, the schools must be housed in primary schools.
