100 Butere Boys Students Hospitalized Following Disease Outbreak, School Closed
On Tuesday, April 4, more than 100 students from Butere Boys’ High School were admitted to hospitals in Kakamega County.
After students showed cholera-like symptoms, including vomiting, the school was closed indefinitely.
The school administration therefore requested that some parents pick up their children from the institution in Kakamega County while others attend to the needs of the students at various hospitals.
Meanwhile, officials from the Ministry of Health and the public health department of Kakamega County took immediate action to prevent the spread of suspected cholera cases at the institution.
The officials also started looking into the possibility of a cholera outbreak in the county.
To prevent additional fatalities, Kakamega County officials similarly put the town on high alert for a possible cholera outbreak.
Cholera, according to public health officials, is a highly contagious disease. It can cause severe acute watery diarrhoea, vomiting, and body pains.
According to a public health advisory, cholera symptoms can appear anywhere between 12 hours and five days after infection.
Cholera is typically contracted after consuming contaminated food or water from an untreated source such as rivers or lakes.
After two students died of suspected food poisoning at Sacred Heart Mukumu Girls High School in the same county, the school was also closed.
