Prof George Magoha, Cabinet Secretary for Education, disclosed that 16,310 2021 KCSE students did not apply for university slots through Kenya University Colleges Central Placement Services (KUCCPS).

Although CS Magoha did not provide specific reasons, he did mention other options, including those who may have chosen to study abroad.

“I have also noted that 16,310 candidates who qualified for degree programs in the 2021 KCSE examination did not submit applications and may have opted to pursue other opportunities, including opting to study abroad,” said Magoha.

KUCCPS placed 123,963 of the 144,466 2021 KCSE candidates who qualified for university slots.

The Ministry of Education announced on Saturday that another 5,278 students were placed in TVET institutions of their choice.

Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Magoha also stated that 16,310 candidates who qualified for degree programs did not apply and may have chosen to pursue other opportunities, such as studying abroad.

According to Magoha, a total of 250,052 students applied for placement this year at universities, TVET institutions, and Teacher Training Colleges (TTCs).

He noted that KUCCPS had placed applicants for admission to the 32 public diploma primary teacher training colleges for the first time.

“A total of 1,538 (1,216 female, 322 male) have been placed in Diploma in Primary Teacher Education and Diploma in Early Childhood Teacher Education,” Magoha said.

He went on to say that KUCCPS placed 293 students (129 male and 164 female) in three colleges that offer Diploma in Secondary Teacher Education, namely Kagumo, Kibabii, and Lugari TTCs.

“These students will be trained to deliver the CBC curriculum,” he said.

He stated that 90% of the 2021 KCSE candidates who received a mean grade of C+ or higher applied and were competitively placed, with 85% getting into degree programs and 5% taking courses in TVET institutions.
