The province is almost entirely inhabited by the Kikuyu speaking community. They are from Kenya’s Eastern Bantu tribe.

During the British colonization of Kenya, much of the province was considered to be part of the ‘White Highlands,’ for the exclusive use of the European community.

As a result, it witnessed political activity from local communities who believed they had an ancestral right to the land.

This tension culminated in the 1950s with the Mau Mau rebellion, which saw the region declared a state of emergency and many prominent political leaders arrested.
