Uasin Gishu County Student Under Finland Program Takes His Life
A medical student participating in the Uasin Gishu County program in Finland, identified as Rodgers Kipruto Kosgey, has committed suicide in his room for reasons yet to be determined.
Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii confirmed the student’s death on social media and expressed shock at the tragic event. Kipruto left Kenya in September 2022 to study nursing at Laurea University Tikkurila campus in Finland through the county’s overseas education program.
Governor Bii described Kipruto as a committed individual with a desire to make a positive impact on society, and his death is a significant loss to his family, friends, and the nursing profession.
The Uasin Gishu County program, which sends more than 300 students to study abroad, has faced corruption allegations and misuse of funds meant to pay for students’ fees.
The matter is currently under investigation by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), with three county officers suspended as a result. The student’s death is unrelated to the ongoing investigation.
The tragic incident highlights the importance of addressing mental health issues among students, particularly those studying abroad, as they may face challenges such as homesickness, academic pressure, and cultural differences.
The Uasin Gishu County program should prioritize mental health support for its participants to prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future. The loss of Kipruto is a reminder of the need to prioritize mental health and provide adequate support to those who need it.
