According to Margaret Mwakima, PS for vocational and technical training, the Taveta Vocational Training Centre will be transformed into a center of excellence for the blue economy.

Mwakima stated that the college will offer marine, fishing, shipping, and maritime courses in the Coast region. In an effort to stimulate the expansion of the blue economy, she stated that the centre will serve Coast students.

The donor-funded project, according to Mwakima, is intended to expand the infrastructure of the center in the border town of Taveta and recruit additional kids to enroll in the new courses.

“The government is keen on tapping the lucrative blue economy industry. This will be made through training as many young people as possible to join the sector,” the PS said on Saturday.

Mwakima stated that the institution will be among others in the Coast region that offer marine, fisheries, shipping, and seafarer programs. In an effort to stimulate the expansion of the blue economy, the centre will serve students from the Coast region, according to the spokesperson.

Mwakima stated that the donor-funded initiative is intended to expand the infrastructure of the center in the border town of Taveta and entice more young people to enroll in the new courses.

“We urge parents to bring their children to learn technical skills which will transform their lives. The skills offered in our facilities are highly marketable and at the same time provide an avenue for self-employment,” Mwakima said.

She was speaking when the Wundanyi constituency inaugurated the construction of dormitories at Wumingu Technical and Vocational Training College.

Mwakima stated that the initiative, which will cost Sh66 million, will assist the institution in attracting more students.

The PS also urged county people to take use of the county’s vocational institutes in order to pursue highly employable artisan courses.

“We advise parents to enroll their children in technical education programs that will improve their life. The skills provided by our facilities are extremely marketable and also provide opportunities for self-employment "Mwakima remarked.

She stated that TVET institutions are crucial in providing the necessary skills and knowledge as the government directs the country toward its Vision 2030 objective of becoming an industrialized middle-income economy.

Mwakima declared the Coast Institute of Technology in Voi will also be promoted to National polytechnic status as part of the government’s efforts to improve technical and vocational training.

She stated that the university will become a premier technical training institution in response to national and international industry demands for educating technical human resources.

"This will give the institution a national outlook and enroll for higher diploma courses. It is part of realizing the country’s Vision 2030,” she added, pointing out that the government has committed huge resources to improving infrastructural development, equipping institutions, and capacity building of the trainers.
