Survey Shows Some Kenyans Want CBC Dropped Entirely
The latest survey conducted by Twaweza’s Sauti za Mwananchi has shown that 48% of Kenyans are not satisfied with the direction in which Kenya is taking to reform the school curriculum.
The study, named ‘What we teach our children: Kenyan citizens’ experiences and opinions on curriculum reforms,’ surveyed 3,000 respondents via a mobile phone panel survey through random sampling from a database of contacts from previous surveys.
The survey was conducted between November 3 and November 17, 2022. The results of the study have shown that only 4% of Kenyans have never heard about the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), with 47% considering it to be better than the previous “8-4-4” system.
While 36% of the respondents prefer the CBC over the 8-4-4 system, 38% of Kenyans believe that the previous system is better. The survey also highlighted that 9% of the respondents felt that the two education systems were the same.
When asked about the challenges facing the implementation of CBC, the respondents listed the financial cost and its time demand as the main issues, with 74% saying it is very costly, while 42% feel that it is too demanding on parents.
Other challenges cited by the respondents include teachers that are not well trained in teaching the CBC at 14%, while 12% think that children get complicated assignments. Ten percent of the respondents said the implementation is not clear, while another 7% cited confusion over where children should go for junior high school.
The survey also revealed that 54% of Kenyans suggested reducing the cost to parents as the most widely-proposed change for improving the CBC.
Other suggestions included making resources and equipment more widely available, reducing the involvement of parents, building the capacity of teachers, and reducing the workload on learners. However, one out of six citizens (17%) suggested that the CBC should be dropped entirely.
In conclusion, the survey conducted by Twaweza’s Sauti za Mwananchi has shown that while 36% of the respondents prefer the CBC over the 8-4-4 system, 48% of Kenyans are not satisfied with the direction in which Kenya is taking to reform the school curriculum.
The respondents cited the financial cost and its time demand as the main challenges facing the implementation of CBC, while the majority of Kenyans suggested reducing the cost to parents as the most widely-proposed change for improving the CBC.
