St. Charles Lwanga Secondary Student Collapses, Dies In School Marathon
Tragedy struck at St. Charles Lwanga Secondary School in Lugari, Kakamega county, where a 20-year-old Form Four student, Timothy Akila, reportedly lost his life following his participation in a school marathon race.
Akila collapsed during the competition and was swiftly taken to Chekalini Hospital, where he later succumbed to the unknown circumstances.
Fred Amugunya, Akila’s father, recounted having a morning conversation with his son before he set out for the school games.

“I spoke to him in the morning, and he told me he was going for the school games. I left to run my errands as he went for the games,” shared Amugunya, who tragically never saw his son alive again.
He was informed of Akila’s death through a distressing call, leaving him perplexed about the events leading to the tragedy.
Expressing his grief, Amugunya stated, “I don’t know what really happened.” The family is now seeking government intervention, urging authorities to investigate the circumstances surrounding Akila’s untimely demise.
In response to this unfortunate incident, Area Chief Julius Mpapale emphasized the importance of parents and teachers being aware of students’ health statuses, particularly those engaging in sports activities.

He stressed the need for proactive measures to prevent crises and called for heightened vigilance in monitoring the well-being of students involved in physical competitions.
