While garnering regional and continental support is crucial for his candidacy, Raila must fulfill specific requirements outlined by the AU should he officially submit his bid.
These prerequisites include holding a Master’s Degree in Law, International Relations, Economics, Diplomacy, Management, Business Administration, Political Science, Social Sciences, or a closely related field from a recognized institution. A PhD in the same field is considered an additional advantage.
Raila, as per his biography, holds an MSc (Master of Science) in Mechanical Engineering from Germany. The AU also mandates that candidates show 20 years of relevant professional and international experience, with at least ten years served in progressively senior leadership roles, preferably in an intergovernmental organization or national government/public service.

Language proficiency is another crucial criterion, with Raila required to demonstrate proficiency in one of the AU working languages and a strong preference for proficiency in another AU working language.
The official languages of the AU include Arabic, English, French, Portuguese, Spanish, Swahili, and any other African language. Raila, being multilingual, is fluent in both Kiswahili and English.
In terms of skills, Raila must showcase transformational leadership experience with a strategic vision, proven abilities in managing complex organizations at the national, regional, or international level, and a track record of setting clear standards for accountability, probity, value for money, risk management, and a zero-tolerance approach to fraud and corruption.
The selection committee will evaluate these qualifications as Raila pursues the AU Commission Chairperson position.
