SRC Clarifies Ksh.7K ECDE Teachers Salary After Uproar
The Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) has responded to the recent reports of salary cuts for Early Childhood Development and Education (ECDE) teachers and caregivers.
The reports have caused an uproar among the Kenyan public who took to social media to voice their concerns.
The Lynn Mengich-led commission has stated that the reports are misleading and that the SRC has only advised on the remuneration for ECDE teachers.
The commission explained that in December 2021, it had advised a gross remuneration for the lowest cadre of ECDE teachers in Nairobi (Cluster 1) to receive between Ksh14,961 and Ksh15,842, while those in Cluster 4 (other areas) would receive between Ksh13,211 and Ksh14,092.
The SRC noted that the Council of Governors (CoG) had asked the commission to evaluate the salaries for ECDE teachers and caregivers.
On January 13, 2023, the SRC issued a clarification reiterating its position on the remuneration and benefits of ECDE teachers.
The SRC has confirmed that it is currently reviewing the remuneration for all public officers, including ECDE teachers, as part of the third remuneration review cycle, which is due to be issued by June 2023.
The SRC has also confirmed that it will continue to evaluate all salaries and make necessary recommendations to various institutions and agencies across the country.
SRC asked governors to implement the new grading and salary structures, which propose a pay cut of between Ksh7,383 and Ksh10,803.
The job group J (ECDE Teacher II) is expected to be the most affected, with a 52% salary cut from Ksh23,310 to Ksh12,980.
On February 3, 2023, over 10,000 ECDE teachers and caregivers staged a protest against the SRC, threatening to go on strike.
The SRC has assured the public that it will continue to engage and respond to stakeholders on the matter.
SRC’s mandate is to set, review, and advise on the remuneration and benefits in the public service, and the commission has confirmed that it will continue to fulfill this mandate.
