Shortage of JSS Teachers Threatens CBC

Public schools in Kenya are currently facing a severe shortage of teachers for Junior Secondary School (JSS) students.

This issue is affecting the country’s new Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), which requires six teachers to handle the 12 core learning areas and two optional subjects.

Despite the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) hiring 21,550 interns, most of whom specialize in subjects like History, Geography, Kiswahili, and Religious Studies, this is still not enough to address the teacher shortage in public schools.

Additionally, the distribution of interns to schools is uneven, with some schools receiving no interns at all. The shortage of JSS teachers is forcing many schools to find creative solutions, such as identifying teachers with diplomas and degrees to fill in the gaps.

This approach is being used at Kariobangi South Primary School, where the school administration has identified four teachers with relevant qualifications to handle JSS classes, in addition to the three interns posted by TSC.

Similarly, Nairobi School has identified eight teachers with upgraded academic qualifications to handle JSS classes.

The shortage of JSS teachers is having a significant impact on schools, and the situation is not expected to improve soon.

The Kenya Primary Schools Heads Association national chairman Johnson Nzioka has stated that while the government is trying to address the issue, more needs to be done.

The Kenya Union Post Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet) secretary-general Akelo Misori has emphasized that the shortage of JSS teachers is a serious crisis that requires urgent action.

In conclusion, the shortage of JSS teachers in public schools in Kenya is a critical issue that requires immediate attention. While some schools are finding creative ways to fill the gaps, such as identifying teachers with relevant qualifications, more needs to be done to address the shortage of JSS teachers across the country.

The government and other stakeholders should work together to find lasting solutions to this crisis, which is affecting the education of JSS students and impacting the implementation of the CBC.
