School BOM Wants Autopsy Done for Student Who Died After Caning
The board of management of Chemase Secondary School in Nandi County has requested that an independent pathologist conduct an autopsy on the body of a student who recently died.
The chairman of the board, Joel Chemiron, stated that the only way to provide justice to the deceased student’s family and the teachers involved was through the government and an independent pathologist.
The chairman confirmed that the deceased student received 22 strokes of the cane from two teachers who punished him for cheating in a Physics test.
The senior principal of the school, Martin Masika, also stated that the student was given corporal punishment by two teachers, Alex Kipkirui and Hillary Kiplimo.
The board of management believes that an autopsy will establish the cause of death and bring the truth to light. The chairman dismissed a preliminary report issued by the hospital’s acting medical superintendent Elkana Chirchir as the cause of death.
He emphasized that the school wanted to maintain calm and stop speculations until the truth was established.
The school has been closed to ease tension and anxiety in the area, and it will be reopened on March 20, 2023, after all the issues have been resolved.
The mother of the deceased student, Monica Jerobon, stated that her son was vomiting blood when she was summoned to the school.
She also noted that her son was healthy when he left home for school and was eager to catch up with the rest of his class since he reported late due to a lack of school fees. Unfortunately, the student died at the hospital while undergoing treatment.
Human rights groups have called for government chief pathologist Johansen Oduor and the independent medical unit (IMLU) to carry out an autopsy on the body at Nandi hills hospital. This would provide a fair and impartial investigation into the cause of death.
