Residents Apologise to former Moi University VC Laban Ayiro, Demand Removal of Professor Isaac Kosgey

The Moi University is once more experiencing a leadership dispute that jeopardizes the institution’s ability to function effectively.

They demanded the removal of Vice Chancellor Professor Isaac Kosgey from his position, citing alleged inadequate leadership. Additionally, they called for an apology to former VC Laban Ayiro.

One of the Kesses residents lamented that the management employs individuals on a permanent basis while their children, employed as casual workers, are not given permanent jobs.

Additionally, the resident mentioned the disappearance of a Sh3 million maize mill, which used to serve both Moi University and the local community. The resident expressed suspicion that the mill might have been sold for the purpose of leasing the farm.

The protestors claimed that despite the facility being located in their community, they were not benefiting from it.

Another demonstrator echoed these concerns, emphasizing the significant role the maize mill played in value addition for the university and the local community. There are suspicions that the mill has been sold to facilitate the leasing of the farm.

The demonstrators subsequently delivered their petition at the office of the Kesses Sub-County Commissioner.Deputy County Commissioner of Kesses Lilian Langat stated, upon receiving the petition, that she would relay the concerns via the proper channels.

In an effort to remove interim VC Professor Laban Ayiro from office, locals participated in protests organized by leaders from Uasin Gishu and Elgeyo-Marakwet counties in 2016.

Jackson Mandago, who was then the governor and is now the senator of Uganda Gishu, vowed to confront management until they acquiesced.

A protester declared the intent to deal with the management, asserting their presence in council meetings akin to village elders. However, some appear to now regret the decision.

Furthermore, one protester apologized to Ayiro, acknowledging him as the right person for the position of vice chancellor at Moi University and sincerely asking for forgiveness.

Later, university administration has pledged to issue a comprehensive statement on the matter.
