Public Outcry Over Mandera County 400k Bursary Allocation to Private and Foreign University Student

A section of the Kenyan public is enraged that Mandera County purportedly granted a student a Ksh400,000 stipend to attend an international university. Online reports claimed that the governor transferred the funds to a student enrolled at Kampala University, a private institution situated in neighboring Uganda.

Kenyans found it perplexing that the county government was granting such significant sums to a single student while overlooking others. One individual commented, “In our society, we should not tolerate such levels of nepotism.” They urged accountability for leaders involved in this decision.

Others hypothesized that the student was the governor’s relative. Kenyan citizens perceived this as evidence that certain politicians were dissidently pursuing personal gain through the misappropriation of county funds.

Kenyans demanded the impeachment of the governor and others in public office who are entrenching nepotism in the wake of the revelation. Concerned Kenyans assert that these governors misappropriate funds designated for development initiatives and use them for their personal benefit.

“Since when did bursaries start catering for private institutions or those outside the country,” another participant inquired. Others, however, argued that it was justified to award the bursary to the student if he met the eligibility requirements.

Additionally, they stated that prominent politicians have secured government positions and opportunities for their relatives, despite their ineligibility. Corruption has been attributed to the devolved entities’ sluggish progress.

The incident in Mandera County has once again highlighted the adverse impact of corruption on the development of devolved units in Kenya. The misallocation of resources, favoritism, and misuse of public funds have hindered the progress of counties and derailed efforts to improve the lives of Kenyan citizens.

Consequently, more people are demanding increased transparency and accountability in allocating public resources to guarantee their utilization for the welfare of all residents, rather than a privileged minority.
