Probe Launched into Unidentified Illness in a Meru School: 101 Students Treated
The Meru County department of public health is investigating how students from Kaaga Boys’ High School were treated for an unidentified illness without informing it over the past two weeks.
Since April 1, at least 101 students have received treatment, according to reports.
Several of the students were reportedly wheezing, while others were treated for diarrhea.
Paul Kimathi, director of public health, stated that food and water samples were removed from the school for analysis at the government chemist.
Suspected outbreak of cholera
Wednesday marked the end of classes at Mukuuni Boys High School in Chuka, Tharaka Nithi County, due to a suspected outbreak of cholera at the institution.
Bridget Wambua, director of education for Tharaka Nithi County, confirmed to Citizen Digital that a limited number of students have been complaining of stomach pains and diarrhea since last week.
On Monday of this week, the situation worsened, and approximately 40 students were afflicted.
“Some were taken to the hospital where they got treated and returned to school but three were admitted. One of them has already been discharged and allowed to go home,” said Wambua.
She added that the administration of the school believes the facility’s water source may have been tainted by hazardous substances due to a nearby road construction project.
She added that her department will issue an official statement regarding the incident only after receiving a report from the county’s public health officer.
When school resumes, students will take their final examinations.
