Primary Teachers Shortage Stands at 44,496: Top Counties With Shortages
According to latest data, there are 223,296 primary school teachers, but the schools require up to 267,792 teachers, leaving a deficit of 44,496.
Other counties with significant primary school teacher shortages include Kilifi, which requires 3,344 instructors for its 543 schools.
According to the report, Narok County, which has 711 primary schools, requires 2,954 new instructors.
Kakamega County, which has approximately 895 primary schools, will need approximately 2,922 tutors to meet its needs.
Kitui ranks fifth among the counties with the greatest primary school teacher shortage.
With 1,382 primary schools, the county requires 2,911 new instructors.
The report identifies a total teacher shortage of 44,496 in the 23,274 primary schools.
Overall, TSC will need Sh134 billion to implement its strategic plan.
Dr. Macharia, recognizing the crisis in schools, stated that the teacher shortage informed the 2023–2027 Strategic Plan, which concentrates heavily on the welfare of teachers.
‘‘Teachers ultimately shape learners’ lives. To enable us to serve our clients better, we have changed our corporate vision statement to be a motivated, ethical, and globally competitive teacher,’’ she said.
She added: ‘‘It is abundantly clear that the teacher is the focus of our reforms. The main strategic focus areas highlighted in the new plan are a testament to the direction we are taking.’’
To assist with the implementation of the new curriculum, an additional 2,000 intern educators will be placed in primary schools. Dr. Macharia stated that the current applications will conclude on July 18th.
