Nyamira Teacher Commits Suicide, Leaves Burial Instructions To Wife
On February 19, a high school English teacher in Nyamira County committed suicide by jumping into a well at Tinga market. The teacher’s body was found floating in the water reservoir, and a suicide note was discovered near his body.
In the note, the deceased revealed that he had been receiving multiple threats from a woman who had vowed to end his life.
He claimed that he had not been himself since he received an SMS from this woman, who had told him that killing him would not be a big deal. He stated that the woman would be able to explain why she wanted him dead.
The teacher also shared that he had been swindled out of Ksh700,000 by two conmen and that a father and three sons owed him Ksh800,000 for a piece of land he sold them.
He said that he had been living a life of humiliation and desperation and that he could only find peace through suicide. He left instructions with his wife regarding his burial.
The police have launched an investigation into the teacher’s death and the claims made in his suicide note. A conclusive report is expected once the post-mortem results are out.
Residents of the area have called for the well to be fenced or permanently closed to the public, as it has claimed several lives since its establishment.
Colleagues and former students of the teacher have eulogized him as a soft-spoken man and a great teacher who had a significant impact on their lives.
Counselors, medics, and psychologists advise that it is always essential to seek help when experiencing mental health issues. People can call the Kenya Red Cross toll-free hotline, 1199, for support.
