Nyamira Teacher Arraigned in Court for Allegedly Caning Student 107 Times

Jackson Mobisa Marucha, a primary school teacher from Nyamira County who allegedly caned a student 107 times on March 26, was arraigned at the Keroka Law Courts on Wednesday and pleaded not guilty to causing great bodily injury to the minor.

Four pupild testified in the closed court session that has been rescheduled for October 4, 2023.

Marucha, a teacher at Riang’ombe Primary School in Borabu, is said to have mercilessly beaten the Grade Four student, 9 years old, after he reported that his uniforms were stolen from the clothesline.

Marucha allegedly attempted to conceal the abhorrent act by confining the victim to a dorm and denying him medical care after realizing the severity of his wounds.

Following the incident, the boy’s buttocks were lacking quite a bit of flesh.

The offensive incident of corporal punishment did not come to light until the boy’s classmates informed his uncle, who had come to visit him at school, of the situation.

Prior to the revelation by the minor’s classmates, the school administration allegedly prohibited the boy’s uncle from seeing him.

The boy, who was recovering at Nyamira Referral Hospital at the time, informed medical staff that Marucha brutally attacked him despite his pleadings for mercy.

After the story went viral on social media, Kenyans, led by former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko, demanded the urgent arrest of the teacher on Twitter.

Marucha was arrested on June 4 after nearly two months on the run.
