Nairobi Tops List of Cities With Most Expensive International Schooling in Africa
According to the International Schools Database (ISD), the average cost of international schooling in Nairobi is Sh4.2 million ($30,934) per year, making it the most expensive city for international schooling in Africa.
However, the data also shows that there is a wide range of prices, with schools charging as little as Sh125,991 ($935) per year. The demand for international schooling in the country has been increasing due to a large number of expatriates and a growing middle class that is willing to pay a premium for their children’s education.
International schools in Nairobi offer a curriculum that is different from the local education system. ISD data as of December 31st, 2022, also shows that Addis Ababa is the second-most expensive city for international schooling in Africa, with an average cost of Sh3.8 million ($28,009) per year, followed by Johannesburg with Sh3.2 million ($23,684), Kampala with Sh2.8 million ($21,100), Casablanca with Sh1.6 million ($11,734), and Cape Town with Sh759,181 ($5,634).
However, Cape Town remains the least expensive city in Africa for international schooling, and it has moved up one place to become the second least expensive destination in the world.
Despite being the most expensive city in Africa for international schooling, Nairobi ranks 57th out of 76 cities worldwide. Addis Ababa, Johannesburg, Kampala, Casablanca, and Cape Town rank 64th, 69th, 70th, 74th, and 75th, respectively, in terms of the cost of international schooling.
