Mystery Surrounds Death of High School Student Who Won KSh200,000 Lottery
Katulani police in Kitui County are investigating the death of a Form Two student, Syengo Nyamai, who was murdered by unknown persons shortly after winning Ksh. 200,000 from a local sports betting firm.
The 17-year-old student, who attended Mavindini Day Mixed Secondary School, won the lottery two weeks ago by gambling on the 2023 Carabao Cup Final match between Manchester United and Newcastle United, which was played on February 26.
The police are currently conducting investigations to identify the last people who were with Syengo or communicating with him before his murder.
The body of the student was found on March 4, dumped in a thicket a few kilometers from his rural home in Maliku, after he had been missing for six days. Two suspects are in custody, and they will be arraigned in court once the investigations are complete.
The postmortem report conducted at Kitui Hospital revealed that Syengo had injuries to his head, his right hand was broken, and his eyes were gouged out.
According to Syengo’s elder brother, Munyithya Nyamai, Syengo used a neighbor’s national identity card to register a Safaricom SIM card, which he used to enroll in the lottery. However, he did not inform his family that he had won the Ksh. 200,000 lottery.
The police are urging members of the public to report any information that may help with the investigation, and they have assured the public that they will leave no stone unturned in their quest for justice.
The tragic incident has sent shockwaves throughout the community, and many are calling for measures to be put in place to protect young people from the dangers of gambling.
