Matiang’i Declares Monday a Public Holiday.
Monday, July 11, has been declared a public holiday by the government.
In a Gazette Notice dated Friday, July 8, Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i declared Monday a public holiday in honor of Idd-Ul-Adha.
“It is notified for general information that in the exercise of the powers conferred by sections 3 as read with section 2 (2) of the Public Holidays Act (Cap. 110), the Cabinet Secretary for Interior and Co-ordination of National Government declares Monday, 11th July 2022 a public holiday marking Idd-ul-Adha,” read the notice in part.
Muslims all over the world observe Eid al-Adha, or the Feast of Sacrifice, as a major holiday lasting three to four days.
The majority of Muslims would attend special prayers held at various major mosques and Islamic centers across the country.
The celebrations mark the end of the Pilgrimage to Mecca, where Muslim faithful gather ahead of the official declaration.
This festival’s announcement is based on lunar sightings, so the date changes from time to time.

According to the Quran, Ibrahim was about to sacrifice his son Ishmael when a voice from heaven intervened and allowed him to make another sacrifice.
Instead of the son, a ram is sacrificed in the Old Testament.
During this holiday, Muslims participate in charitable activities such as donating money, food, and clothing to the needy.
The official declaration of the holiday follows a series of false reports on various social media platforms about when the holiday would be gazetted.
