Maseno Student Murder: Haki Africa Demands Action Against Police Pfficers
HAKI Africa, a human rights organization, has called for the suspension and prosecution of police officers responsible for the killing of a Maseno University student and the shooting of two others during a protest in the area.
According to reports, the two students who were shot are a fourth-year Maseno University student of computer science and a seven-year-old minor from Bar Korumba secondary school.
Wamboi Fatuma, the Convenor Winam Social Justice Centre, stated that both students were shot in the arms. Wamboi and HAKI Africa CEO Hussein Khalid visited the two students at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital.
The fourth-year student reported that he was in his hostel reading when something hit him on his right arm. He alerted his colleagues, who took him to the hospital, where they discovered that he had been shot.
The 17-year-old student, on the other hand, was shot in the back and right arm after being arrested by an officer and put inside their vehicle. According to the student, the officers beat him on the knees with the gun’s button before firing the shot.
Hussein reminded the police that they operate under a regime that had pledged to end extrajudicial killings and police excess in the country.
He urged the IPOA and Internal Affairs Unit of the police to ensure that the officers involved are suspended from work to pave the way for investigations.
Hussein also noted that they have information that some family members are already being threatened over the matter and appealed to the authorities to ensure justice for the victims.
Maseno University students who visited their colleagues at the hospital stated that they are speaking in one voice against human rights violations and will ensure that justice is served.
Hussein further urged the public to ensure there is order in the process of protesting against all ills within the society.
In conclusion, the killing of the Maseno University student and the shooting of two others during a protest is a gross violation of their fundamental human rights.
The police officers responsible for the shooting should be suspended from work to pave the way for investigations and ensure that justice is served.
The authorities should also ensure the safety of the victims and their families and bring the culprits to book to prevent a recurrence of such incidents.
