Man Arrested Marrying Off 14-Year-Old Daughter in Uganda
Authorities in Uganda are investigating a disturbing case where a 40-year-old man was caught attempting to marry off his 14-year-old daughter in the northern district of Apac.
According to District Police Commander David Ndaula, officers received a tipoff from a child rights activist on March 8, who informed them about the ongoing ceremony.
Acting on the information, police officers stormed the ceremony and arrested the father of the minor, while the groom and other attendees fled the scene. Unfortunately, the other culprits managed to escape, but investigations are still ongoing to apprehend them.
Commander Ndaula urged those involved in such practices to stop and allow minors to lead normal lives, including enrolling them in schools. The suspect will remain in police custody until the investigation is complete, and efforts to capture the other suspects are ongoing.
This incident highlights the prevalence of child marriages in Uganda, which is a significant issue in the country. According to a 2016 UNICEF report, 25% of Ugandan girls are married before the age of 18, with some marrying as young as 12.
Child marriages have a detrimental effect on the lives of young girls, denying them their right to education, healthcare, and a decent life. They also expose them to abuse, exploitation, and health risks, such as early pregnancies and childbirth complications.
The Ugandan government has taken steps to address the issue of child marriages, including passing the Children’s Act, which criminalizes the practice. However, enforcement of the law is still a challenge in some parts of the country, where cultural practices and poverty fuel the practice.
Efforts are ongoing to raise awareness about the dangers of child marriages and empower girls to stay in school and pursue their dreams. The incident in Apac District highlights the need for more action to protect vulnerable girls and ensure that their rights are respected.
