LGBT+ Persecution: Ugandan Teacher Arrested for Recruiting Students

Police have arrested a sports teacher at PMM Girls High School in Jinja, Uganda, on charges of being a lesbian.

Parents and members of the alumni association stormed the school to protest the teacher’s alleged homosexual activities. They accused the female teacher of recruiting students into lesbian activities, which led to the arrest.

The teacher’s purported lesbian partner filed a police report accusing her of neglecting her. She also reported her for engaging in recruiting school girls into homosexual activities.

According to James Mubi, the Kiira regional police spokesperson, the alleged lesbian partner of the teacher surrendered to police. Both of them are in custody.

The partner claimed that the teacher was cheating on her and not providing her with basic needs. She testified to the police that she rented a house for her partner and set up a timber business for her.

Penal Code

The authorities will charge the couple with sexual harassment. Uganda’s Section 145 of the Penal Code Act cap 120 declares sexual harassment illegal. This section prohibits any ‘unnatural sexual acts’, and the punishment for conviction is life imprisonment.

Uganda still criminalizes homosexuality, and its parliament is attempting to introduce anti-homosexuality law. The previous one was invalidated by courts for lacking the required quorum and thus being illegal.

The Anti-Homosexuality Act became law in 2013, but the country’s Constitutional Court nullified it a few months after President Yoweri Museveni signed it in February 2014.

The issue of homosexuality in Uganda has been a contentious one for many years, with the country’s government taking a strong stance against it.

The arrest of the sports teacher at PMM Girls High School is just one example of the ongoing persecution of LGBT+ individuals in the country.

It is essential to remember that all individuals have the right to live their lives free from discrimination and persecution, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.
