Machogu Urges More Students to Pursue ICT Courses
According to Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu, it is crucial to embrace rapid technological changes to promote long-term learning, especially as the world shifts towards a digital economy.
Kenya has already made remarkable strides in the field of start-ups, which have created numerous job opportunities for the country’s citizens.
However, to ensure the country’s overall success, Machogu emphasizes the need to incorporate digital learning technologies and skills into all curricula and implement appropriate teaching methods.
He believes that the integration of digital skills into basic education is essential for any nation’s success.
Machogu stated that their aim for technical and vocational training centers is to attain international standards and offer their graduates dual certification.
He believes that this will address the issue of high unemployment levels and help transform the country into having self-employed youth. To achieve this goal, the Ministry plans to partner with Digital Labs across TVET centers to transform the entire digital space.
The Education Cabinet Secretary believes that the digital economy will drive growth and create jobs, especially for the youth. The government has already started implementing the Digital Economy Enablement Program, with national polytechnics Kabete and Kisii receiving equipment for this initiative.
The program aims to provide the youth with access to digital skills and opportunities. Kisii has already received 100 computers as part of the initiative.
In the last decade, digital innovations have resulted in new jobs and occupations such as data analysts, digital security experts, social media marketers, and data entry clerks that have absorbed the increasing number of youth graduating from universities.
Nairobi has emerged as a hub for successful start-ups, particularly in the fintech space, with companies such as Cellulant, Africa’s Talking, Sokowatch, Fuzu, and Apollo.
Embracing digital technologies and skills in education will help create more job opportunities for the youth and promote the country’s overall economic growth.
The Ministry of Education believes that integrating digital skills into the basic education system will help the country achieve sustainable development in the long term.
