The Ministry of Education in Kenya has dismissed reports that students who took the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) in 2022 would have to sit for an entrance exam before being admitted to university.

Kennedy Buhere, Head of Communications in the Ministry of Education, State Department of Early Learning and Basic Education, described the reports as fake and advised parents to ignore them.

Another source close to Education Cabinet Secretary also dismissed the claims and advised parents to wait for official information from CS Machogu and other education stakeholders. Reports of entry exams had been shared widely on social media platforms, with one tweet attracting more than 89,000 views and over 200 engagements.

The Parliamentary Public Investments Committee (PIC) announced on April 25 that all students who sat for the KCSE 2022 exams would receive placement letters from the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS). The committee made the announcement after meeting KUCCPS Chief Executive Officer, Agnes Wahome.

The statement from the committee revealed that over 170,000 students awaiting university placement would be enrolled in public universities that have a capacity of over 190,000 slots. KUCCPS also announced that the online portal would be opened for students to join institutions of their choice in September once they received the go-ahead.

The reports about entry exams had caused concern among parents and students, who were uncertain about the requirements for university admission. The Ministry of Education’s dismissal of the claims has provided clarity and assurance that students who sat for the KCSE in 2022 will receive placement letters and be enrolled in public universities.

The KUCCPS’s announcement about opening the online portal has also provided students with the opportunity to choose institutions they wish to join. It is important for parents and students to rely on official information from education stakeholders and avoid circulating unverified information on social media.

This will prevent unnecessary anxiety and confusion among the public, especially during a critical time for students awaiting university placement.
