KUPPET Wants TSC Withdraw Teachers Promotion Advert, Calls For Inclusion of More Cadres.
Friday, Kuppet’s Kisii branch executives objected fiercely against the proposed exclusion of several teachers from teacher promotions.
Officials from the Kenya Union of Post-Primary Teachers described the idea as a mockery to teachers, particularly those in occupational groups C2, C3, and C4.
The Teachers Service Commission has posted 10,000 promotion openings.
Abincha Mogire, general secretary of the Kuppet union branch, stated that the teachers are being lied to.
Particularly, he debunked TSC CEO Nancy Macharia’s claim that the government has already reviewed all teachers for promotions.
Abincha stated that hundreds of teachers are still languishing in one position and that the administration should stop misleading the public about it.
According to him, many secondary school teachers have remained in the same position for over 17 years, resulting in low morale.
“This can even even be revealed by the teachers themselves or their directors. There is a deliberate move by those who did the advert to discredit the true picture of what is on the ground,” he said on Friday.
During a press conference, the Union Secretary was flanked by Laban Ouko, branch chairman.
After a tense meeting at the Storm Hotel in Kisii, they spoke.
The officials instructed TSC to withdraw the advertisement and release a new one in which all cadres of teachers can be promoted.
“It’s unfair that our teachers are given sad Christmas news,” Mogire told journalists.
The submission date for promotion applications was Friday, September 23.
“We are sad people, we don’t know how we are going to take our Christmas because our members are crying and they are always disturbing us to ensure we escalate this information so that it can be acted upon,” Abincha said.
Regarding the health insurance program, Union representatives requested that Medhill Hospital be reinstated to the list of locations where teachers can obtain medical care.
“We want it reinstated including the group cover for us because it was important for our members, "Abincha said.
Ouko, for his part, stated that teacher advancements are not a privilege, but rather a profession-based right.
"Every employee looks forward to some promotion at some point and it is not good that any teacher be deliberately locked out of opportunities for professional progression,” he said.
According to TSC’s circular, at least 10,000 teachers would receive promotions.
Ouko stated that it is unfortunate that the majority of people are excluded.
“It will cause nothing but low morale in the service. There is nothing bad in any industry like a demotivated staff,” he said.
