KUPPET CBC Teachers Salary Increased
According to Augustine Luketelo, the Executive Secretary of Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet) in Bungoma County, the government needs to prioritize the issue of teacher’s pay before they supply the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) books to schools.
In a recent interview with The Star newspaper, Luketelo insisted that no teacher should step into a CBC classroom without an assurance of good pay.
The unionist went on to call on the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to engage in conversations with the government to increase the CBC teachers’ salaries or allowances.
The government of Kenya has made strides to ensure that schools are supplied with learning materials, but according to Luketelo, they have not put the teachers’ pay into consideration.
The Kuppet official argued that it is either the teachers’ salaries or their allowances that need to be increased to motivate them to effectively teach the CBC.
The CBC is a new curriculum that aims to equip learners with relevant skills and knowledge to deal with real-life situations. However, the implementation of the curriculum has faced several challenges, with some teachers refusing to teach it due to inadequate training and poor remuneration.

Luketelo also raised concerns about the poor infrastructure in some schools, particularly the lack of laboratories to aid in practical lessons. He asserted that for the CBC to be implemented effectively, the government should ensure that school infrastructure is in good condition and adequate to serve learners.
This means that schools should be equipped with the necessary resources to facilitate learning, including textbooks, teaching aids, and laboratories, among others.
Kuppet is a union that represents teachers in Kenya, and they have been in talks with the government concerning teachers’ pay.
The union has been pushing for better salaries and working conditions for teachers in Kenya, and they have staged several strikes in the past to demand their rights.
It is worth noting that teachers’ pay has been a contentious issue in Kenya, with teachers demanding a pay rise to match the cost of living.
According to Kuppet, teachers’ pay has not been revised in line with the current economic situation, and this has demotivated teachers and affected their performance.
The government needs to understand that teachers are the backbone of the education system, and their motivation is critical to the success of any curriculum.
The implementation of the CBC requires well-trained and motivated teachers, adequate resources, and proper infrastructure.
Therefore, the government needs to address the concerns of teachers, including their pay, if they want to ensure the effective implementation of the CBC and improve the quality of education in Kenya.
