KUCCPS Reveals Common Mistake Causing Applicants to Miss University Slots
On Wednesday, June 7, a director from the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) stated that candidates who failed to submit their applications would likely lose out on university spots.
John Olouch, director of Placement Coordination and Career Development at KUCCPS, said that a number of applicants were failing to complete the final stage of the application process by leaving courses in the portal’s shopping cart.
The director stated that the affected individuals did not thoroughly read instructions.
When the application window closes, the system will indicate that the pool of candidates with unselected options did not submit an application.
According to the director, a basket functions similarly to a grocery store purchasing cart, allowing applicants to select various courses from a larger pool of courses listed on the KUCCPS online portal.
They are expected to randomly select as many courses as they desire from that container. The applicants can then restrict their options before submitting their application.
Olouch, a former professor at Rongo University, observed, however, that some applicants did not submit their coursework.
“When they access the portal, they can choose from over 100 courses offered by all institutions. They collect them and place them temporarily in the container. They can store more than they must select for the container,” he explained.
“Upon their return, they will have narrowed down the courses and will be working with a shorter selection. Some students may not have read and comprehended this, or they may believe their applications have been submitted by leaving the courses in the container.
"This is analogous to heading to the grocery store and placing items in a shopping cart. That does not imply that one must purchase every item in the shopping cart. Others can be chosen and returned, he insisted.
The deadline for submitting college or university placement preferences was set for Wednesday, June 7.
During the launch of the portal on May 17, the Education Cabinet Secretary stated that only public university courses would be eligible for government scholarships and loans, while private university courses would only be eligible for government loans.
