KU Student’s Murder Takes Unexpected Turn with Phone Data and Autopsy Findings
On Thursday, April 6, police investigating the murder of June Jerop, a student at Kenyatta University who was allegedly killed while on a coffee date, revealed that they were pursuing a lead that would link the main suspect to one of her coworkers.
Judith Nyongesa, commander of the Makadara sub-county police, revealed to the media that the 36-year-old was in contact with two men the evening she vanished.
As the police continued to investigate the murder in an effort to determine the killer’s motivation, the colleague was also detained as a person of interest in the case.
In addition, it was alleged that the colleague was related to the primary suspect in the murder. Police, however, played coy with the report, refusing to confirm a connection between the two incidents.
“The movements and the connections of the phones reveal that they were together all the time, and that is what led us to arrest the main suspect,” the police stated.
Jerop’s sister, Joyce Jepkemoi, argued that they were suspicious of the main suspect’s relationship with some of her sister’s colleagues and urged the police to expedite their investigation.
“The suspect is coincidentally a relative of one of her colleagues. For us, it is really raising a lot of eyebrows,” she stated.
On Monday, March 20, Jerop was discovered murdered next to Jamhuri Primary School, which is located next to Ngong Road.
The 36-year-old was seen on CCTV at South B and Imara Daima at a pharmacy with the main suspect, who was driving a black Mercedes Benz.
The police tracked the final phone signals at Mavoko before it became completely dark.
After traveling from Bungoma County, the primary suspect was apprehended in the Industrial district.
A postmortem performed on Thursday, April 6, on the body of June Jerop, a Kenyatta University student who was discovered dead after a coffee date, revealed that she died of excessive bleeding.
The 36-year-old was stabbed in the chest, according to a study conducted by pathologists at a Nairobi County hospital.
His bloody vehicle was later recovered from his Bungoma residence. To determine whose blood it was, samples were taken from the vehicles.
Meanwhile, police in Nairobi arrested Jerop’s boyfriend, who was considered a person of interest in the case.
Detectives think the murder was committed with an alibi, so police are looking into additional suspects.
