Knut Wants 100,000 JSS Teachers Employed
The Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) is calling on the Ministry of Education to employ over 100,000 teachers to support the education of Junior Secondary School (JSS) students.
Knut Secretary General, Collins Oyuu, stated that many schools have not yet started learning due to an acute shortage of teachers for Grade Seven students.
In some cases, there is not a single teacher present in the school or only one teacher is posted, which makes it impossible for the teacher to manage multiple streams in the same class.
The shortage of teachers has been exacerbated by the lack of books in some schools, even after the Ministry of Education rolled out the distribution of textbooks this week.
Oyuu also highlighted that the requirements set by the Teachers’ Service Commission (TSC) for those who want to teach JSS students has locked many teachers out, as only those who scored C Plus in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations are eligible for the job.
The Knut is asking the TSC to consider lowering the requirement to C Plain, as most teachers who went through Teachers Training Colleges have the capability to teach at the junior secondary level.
The Knut is determined to address the challenges facing the education sector and will continue to push for the employment of more teachers.
Oyuu has visited several schools and has witnessed the lack of progress due to the shortage of teachers and books.
The situation is dire and immediate action is needed to ensure that students receive the education they deserve.
