KNEC Reveals 3 Most Popular Platforms Used to Spread Exam Materials
The Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) is currently confronting an emergent threat posed by the publication of national examinations papers on social media platforms.
In the past three years, 98 instances of social media accounts committing cybercrime against the education sector have been reported.
In a letter sent by the Kenya National Examination Council (Knec) Chief Executive David Njengere, the council requested that Telegram channels and Facebook forums used to perpetrate the infractions be taken down.
Dr Njengere said in a letter dated December 8, 2022 Njengere stated, ‘To avert this threat, the Council is requesting assistance from your organisation to pull down some identified telegram channels and Facebook forums,’’ Njengere said.
However, it was discovered that Knec is still frustrated by online predators who make serious attempts to tamper with national exams.
‘‘The most popular platforms for perpetrating this vice are; Telegram, WhatsApp, and Signal, and as a result have a huge following.
“These platforms have therefore been used to spread exam misinformation, exam fraud, and illegal distribution of exam material, among other cyber-related offences,’’ he stated.
CA Director General Ezra Chiloba remarked, however, that the organization receives numerous requests for assistance in the investigation of cybercrimes, including examination-related offenses enabled by technology.
Chiloba highlighted that their partnership allowed for the identification of perpetrators, sharing of cyber threat information, and preservation of digital forensic evidence to facilitate the investigation and prosecution of cybercrime. He further mentioned that such collaboration also enabled them to take down illegal online channels and content.
During the examination period, there is an increase in technologically-enabled examination fraud that is difficult to detect, according to Chiloba.
