KICD Approves New Scientific Calculator For Schools To Improve Competency
The Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) and CASIO Middle East (CME) have announced a partnership to provide free educational resources and methods for solving mathematics with a scientific calculator.
The collaboration aims to encourage students to learn mathematics and the use of technological tools such as scientific calculators in order to improve their performance and increase their chances of pursuing careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).
The resources are aligned with KICD’s Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) program and consist of tutorials that demonstrate simplified and interactive scientific calculator operations.
The materials are available on the KICD website under the introduction to the CASIO fx-82EX calculator in the open educational resources section. The CASIO fx-82EX calculator, also known as the ‘ClassWiz,’ is an improved version of the fx-82MS model, which is popular among high school students.
The newer version is KICD-approved for use in secondary and higher education levels, and it displays input and results as seen in textbooks to facilitate operation.

Prof Charles O. Ong’ondo, Director/ Chief Executive Officer, Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development said: “Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) focuses majorly on the acquisition of knowledge, skills, attitudes and values.
“It also focuses on the acquisition of knowledge and skills in solving real-life problems. The CASIO Scientific Calculators (fx-82EX) are user friendly and can help learners to a great extent, especially at the tertiary level of education.
"They can contribute a lot in facilitating teachers and learners who handle the STEM subjects.”
Materials were created that included a digital emulator that demonstrates how to use the calculator to solve mathematical problems.
According to CASIO, fractions, powers, algorithms, and mathematical formulas, among other topics, can be easily handled.
The emulator incorporates technology into the classroom and encourages hands-on learning.
The resources include tutorials that demonstrate simplified and interactive scientific calculator operations.
The materials are available on the KICD website under the introduction to CASIOfx-82EX calculator section of the open educational resources section.
To make operation easier, it displays input and results as seen in textbooks.
