The Education Ministry has announced that Grade Six students will choose Junior Secondary Schools (JSS) for placement next month.

The online portal will be available from August 15 to August 30.

Junior Secondary School (JSS) will include Grades 7, 8, and 9 under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).

This comes as the Ministry of Education and the Kenya National Examination Council (Knec) issued guidelines for grading Grade Six assessments and placement into Grade Seven.

Prof George Magoha, Cabinet Secretary for Education, announced yesterday that learners will be able to choose their secondary schools of choice, just as they did for Form One.

“Knec will open the portal from August 15 to August 30, for the Grade Six learners to do their school selection for JSS in readiness for placement,” he said

Learners will be placed in all existing registered public and private secondary schools, according to Prof Magoha.

He stated that public secondary schools that share a compound with a public primary school will use the primary school’s available classrooms as additional learning space, while existing registered private secondary schools will be available for learners whose parents will pay the private secondary schools’ fees.

According to the CS, the transition of learners from upper primary to JSS under CBC will be guided by the results of the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA).

Prof Magoha also stated that students will be admitted to the JSS based on their performance in the KPSEA, equity, which will include the use of affirmative action, school choice by learners based on advice from parents and teachers, and institutional declared capacity.

“Learners, in consultation with their parents and teachers will be given an opportunity to select a public or private secondary school of their choice for their JSS education. Parents shall meet the cost of learning in private schools as is the usual practice,” said Prof Magoha.

Only those who have registered for standalone JSS will be eligible for selection and placement, according to the CS.
