Hopeless KCPE Student Attempts Suicide as Secondary School Dreams Fade
A young student from Kenya is struggling to find hope for his future after failing to receive the necessary support for his education.
The 13-year-old Brian Otieno Mboya, from Andingo village in Homa Bay East, recently sat for the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) exams and received 329 marks.
Despite his efforts, Brian has been struggling with psychological distress caused by stress and helplessness surrounding his education. This led to several unsuccessful attempts at taking his own life.
Fortunately, Brian was introduced to Rachel Oyugi, a psychologist at Oasis Doctors Union Homa Bay, who helped him to understand and cope with his emotions.
According to Oyugi, Brian wanted to end his life to ease the burden on his ailing mother, who was unable to provide for his secondary education.
In their first interaction, Brian was disturbed and hopeless, but with the help of Oyugi, he has since regained energy and hope for the future.
Brian’s father passed away three years ago, leaving behind his widow, Rose Mboya, and six children.
His elder brother completed his Kenya Certificate of Secondary School (KCSE) but was unable to receive his certificate and results slip due to fee-arrears.
Brian’s second-born sibling is now in their fourth year of secondary school, the third child is in form three, and the fourth-born did her KCPE but failed to join form one due to financial difficulties.
Brian is afraid that he will face the same fate as his sister and is desperately in need of support to transition to secondary school.
He dreams of becoming a surgeon in the future, but without financial support, this dream seems unattainable.
His mother had set aside half a sack of maize to offer as school fees to the principal of Homa Bay High School, but this will not be enough.
Brian and his family are in dire need of financial support, and Brian has appealed to well-wishers to help him join Homa Bay High School.
In conclusion, Brian’s story highlights the importance of providing support and assistance to children in need, especially those from low-income backgrounds.
It is essential that they receive the education they deserve, as it provides them with the tools and knowledge they need to achieve their dreams and make a positive impact on society.
By giving them the support they need, we can help to reduce poverty, increase social mobility, and provide them with a brighter future.
