Grade 3 Pupil Drowns in River While Washing Clothes in Homa Bay.
A tragic incident occurred on Sunday at the Gendo-Kibwer bridge in Gendo village, Gwasi East Sub Location within Suba South constituency, Homa Bay County.
A grade three girl, who was out with her siblings to wash her clothes, drowned in the river near the bridge.
The victim was a 12-year-old girl who slipped and drowned in the swollen river, which was caused by heavy rainfall across the country.
Andrew Ombisa, the chief of Gwasi East Location, stated that the girl went to fetch water from the bridge while they were washing their clothes, and unfortunately, she slipped and drowned in the river.
The incident occurred despite the presence of other people in the area. Members of the public who were called to the scene were able to retrieve the girl’s body before it was handed over to the police, who then took it to St Camilus hospital Mortuary.
Ombisa appealed to parents to be watchful over their children at all times, especially when they are around water bodies, to avoid such tragic incidents.
The incident serves as a reminder that children should always be supervised when playing or carrying out any activity around water bodies.
Additionally, parents and guardians should educate their children on the potential dangers of water and the importance of safety precautions such as wearing life jackets and avoiding swimming in deep areas.
