Gov’t Spends Sh3.3 Billion on CBC Infrastructure Projects
The government has so far spent Sh3.3 billion to build CBC classrooms in schools across the Rift Valley region in preparation for the January 2023 transition to junior secondary school.
According to Rift Valley Regional Director of Education Jared Obiero, the government intends to build 2,715 classrooms in the vast region over two phases.
Obiero expressed satisfaction that the first phase of the CBC infrastructure project’s 1,735 classrooms had been completed and handed over to the respective school administration.
The Education Director explained that the second phase of the project was currently underway, with 238 classrooms completed and handed over to the respective schools, out of a total of 980.
He did note, however, that construction of two classrooms in the Muchongoi area of Marigat in Baringo County had yet to begin, but assured that plans were in place to begin construction before the end of the year.
While praising the project’s progress, the Director stated that the contractors were working around the clock to ensure that the work was completed on time ahead of the transition of grade six students to junior secondary school in the coming year.
“We are confident that all the classrooms will be ready for use before the end of this year,” Obiero assured.
As a result, Obiero praised the contractors’ and Education Ministry officials’ dedication to completing the project on time, and he urged parents to continue supporting the government’s efforts to make the CBC curriculum a success.
The Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) researched and developed the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC) to replace the 8-4-4 education system.
The system, which consists of a 2-6-3-3-3 education cycle, was introduced in 2017.
However, more classrooms were required to ensure a smooth transition, which led to the establishment of the CBC infrastructure project.
To ensure that the local community benefited from the change, the government mandated that only local contractors be eligible to win tenders for classroom construction.

The program’s specifications stated that the cost of constructing a single classroom would be fixed in all counties at Sh788, 000.
County and sub-county committees were tasked with overseeing the development of school infrastructure.
Chiefs in the committees were to ensure that the contractors adhered to the established qualities and standards.
As the local artisans continue with the construction work, they are expected to file daily reports.
