Government To Facilitate Junior Secondary Student Placement In Private Schools

Private school owners can now expect to make a lot of money after the government announced new guidelines for increasing student enrollment by Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha.

Magoha stated in the guidelines for Junior Secondary School (JSS) admissions that all stand-alone private secondary schools that will be offshoots of existing institutions will be registered and allowed to enroll students.

According to the CS, the only requirement for private schools is the presence of a laboratory.

“The Ministry will undertake registration of all JSS established as stand-alone institutions established from existing private primary schools as long as they have complied with the minimum requirement of classrooms and having a fully equipped laboratory,” said Magoha

Magoha made the announcement after abandoning his initial proposal, which allowed private schools to use existing private school facilities to admit JSS students.

Magoha changed the rules two weeks ago and pleaded with private schools to build stand-alone secondary schools to admit JSS students.

Even though Magoha stated that the government will not fund private schools to build new facilities, the CS appears to have given the institutions an incentive to entice private investors.

Magoha stated during the release of the guidelines last week that under the new JSS admission rules, the government will place students in private schools.

“Learners shall be offered placement in all existing registered public and private secondary schools,” Magoha said.

The government currently only selects and places students in public secondary schools based on form one admissions criteria.

However, as part of the CBC transition to JSS, Magoha stated that the government will facilitate student placement in private schools as well.

Learners will be able to choose a public or private secondary school of their choice for their JSS education, in consultation with their parents and teachers.
