Government Explains Increasing Trend of Foreign Students Seeking Admission in Kenya.
The principal secretary of the Ministry of Education’s State Department for University Education and Research announced on Thursday, September 22, that the number of international students seeking admission has increased.
Nabukwesi, speaking at the First International Annual Conference for Public Universities, attributed the rising trend in admissions to the excellent accomplishments of Kenyan professionals overseas.
He added that the tendency was bolstered by a recent Supreme Court case in which Kenyan attorneys displayed their expertise and justices sustained a high level of professionalism, establishing a precedent for the entire region.
Nabukwesi added, “Recently, our lawyers performed very well at the Supreme Court, and now everyone across the region wants to bring their children to learn here in Kenya.”
He continued, “They are attracted by the high performance of our professionals, which has now been recognized across the borders.”
Nabukwesi added to his justification by stating that Kenyan students studying abroad have continued to impress, hence elevating the stakes for the nation’s education system.
Many Kenyan students who pursue additional education abroad are high achievers.
However, he focused on restructuring the processes, particularly in higher education institutions, to equip graduates with marketable skills.
According to UNESCO forecasts, the country will have 4,782 international students in 2019.
Between 2020 and 2021, the number increased by 6,202. According to market and social research firm CPS Research Overseas, the University of Nairobi has the highest number of international students, with nearly 1,300 enrolled.
The United States International University (USIU-Africa) ranked second with 1,100 students, followed by Strathmore University with 660 and Mount Kenya University (MKU) with 560.
The administration had already declared plans to boost enrolment and admittance to more than 30,000 nationwide.
