Former Maasai Mara University Vice-Chancellor Drops Case Challenging Her Sacking.
Mary Walingo, the former vice-chancellor of Maasai Mara University, has withdrawn her case against her dismissal.
Ms Walingo, who is facing ten corruption-related charges as well as misappropriation of public funds, had sought Sh7.5 million in compensation and damages for what she claimed was illegal interdiction, suspension, and termination of her employment.
However, on June 16, she filed a notice informing the court of her intention to drop the case, citing hearing delays.
Despite protests from the university and its council, who claimed they were not consulted, Justice David Nderitu granted the application and closed the file.
The university informed the court, through lawyer Kahiga Waitindi, that it had filed a counterclaim against the petition, which they wanted to be heard before the case could be withdrawn.
Mr. Waitindi argued that Prof Walingo’s notice was premature and suspicious because it was issued so quickly, denying the university time to respond.
However, Justice Nderitu stated that the university was free to pursue the case further.
Vice-Chancellor Demoted Over Questionable Degree
Prof Walingo requested in her petition that the university pay her Sh4,788,152 in special damages, salaries, and other dues that she claimed were unlawfully withheld from May 2020 to August 2020.
She also sought general damages for the stress, anguish, and trauma she claimed was caused by unfair administrative action.
