Form 3 Girl Commits Suicide After Teacher Ordered Her To Shave Hair As Punishment
The suicide death of a 16-year-old family girl in Nakuru County has devastated the family.
Shamamcy Wanjiru, a Form 3 student at Langalanga Secondary School, is believed to have killed herself on Wednesday evening at her family’s home in Kaloleni, Nakuru.
Wanjiru’s actions, according to her family, were prompted by the fact that she was penalized by one of her teachers in mid-September for unbraiding her hair on the last day of the second term.
According to her family, she was forced to shave her hair then, and the same teacher brought up the issue when she returned to school for the third term.
“Alikuja nyumbani Monday jioni akaambiwa na class teacher Tuesday asikuje shule akuje na mzazi sasa Wednesday wakaenda akaambiwa anyone…. alikuja nyumbani akiwa na hasira nikamwambia anyoe akasema atajua vile atanyoa,” Jane Wairimu, Wanjiru’s relative, told Citizen TV.
According to her relatives, Wanjiru wrote an apologetic letter to her instructor the day before she hanged herself.
Her family reports that she was quiet and introverted, but they did not anticipate that she would take her own life.
The family has been left at a loss, with relatives believing their kin had a promising future.
“Alikuwa anasema anataka kuwa nurse. Sikudhani hiyo punishment alipewa ndio ingemcost maisha yake; walikuwa wasichama wawili. Huyo Mwalimu hakujua mtoto atakatisha maisha yake juu ya kunyoa nywele,” Rosemary Wanjiku, another one of the deceased’s kin, said.
Fredrick Osewe, director of education for the county of Nakuru, states that the instance is isolated and that the incident did not occur on school grounds.
