Eldoret University Staff Stage Protest to Oust Former VC
On Thursday, March 2, 2023, the Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU) at Eldoret University joined the Kenya University Staff Union (KUSU) in a peaceful demonstration.
The demonstrators were demanding that the former Vice Chancellor, Prof Teresa Akenga, vacate her office and allow the new acting Vice Chancellor to assume office.
Dr Nyaberi Mogaka, the Joint chair of UASU and KUSU Eldoret University chapter, led the peaceful demonstration.
Dr Mogaka criticized Prof Akenga for holding on to her office despite the lapse of her leadership tenure at the institution.
He urged the former Vice Chancellor to vacate her office immediately and allow the new acting Vice Chancellor to take over without undue influence.
Dr Mogaka called on the Chancellor and the Council Chair to intervene urgently in the matter.
He stated that they did not wish to see a situation where leaders overstay in office until they are forced out by the people. He added that they would not allow “Mugabeism” to take place in the institution.
Robinson Kibet, the KUSU branch secretary, also urged Prof Akenga to hand over three of the public vehicles she is currently using against the law. He stated that she has since ceased being the holder of the position of Vice Chancellor at the institution.
Prof Akenga was appointed in June 2013 to serve as the varsity’s Vice Chancellor. However, it appears that her tenure has ended, and she is still holding on to her office.
The demonstrators are calling for her to vacate her office and allow the new acting Vice Chancellor to take over.
