Egerton, Abrar Universities Partnership to Broaden Doctoral Student Pool

Egerton University is planning to enter into an academic partnership with Abrar University of Somalia to broaden the pool of doctoral students and supervisors, develop research capacity, and share facilities and expertise.

The partnership will involve exchanging students and developing joint research projects, among other initiatives.

The collaboration is aimed at developing academic cooperation between the two universities on the basis of equality and reciprocity, promoting relations, and mutual understanding.

The two institutions will collaborate in joint research activities, supervision of post-graduate research projects, and organizing conferences, workshops, and webinars in areas such as agriculture, medicine, education, health sciences, engineering, innovation, humanities, and social sciences.

The partnership intends to build and increase capacity in doctorate degrees and shine a spotlight on the quality of supervision of post-graduate research projects. Strengthening supervision of post-graduate research projects will build the capacity to support more candidates to complete their studies.

The model being explored will enable students to draw supervisors from any of the two universities to gain access to expertise.

Abrar University is committed to building international partnerships to nurture global citizenship, engage the global research community, and attract talented students and funding.

Heavy workload and inadequate capacity have been identified as some of the drawbacks to the aspiration of quality PhD research output in Eastern Africa.

The collaboration between Egerton University and Abrar University will help to address these challenges by building and increasing capacity in doctoral degrees and improving the quality of supervision of post-graduate research projects.

Abrar University of Somalia is a private institution established in 2014 by an Act of the Imam Shafi Foundation (ISHF) and is accredited by the National Commission of Higher Education of Somalia.

The partnership with Egerton University will enable the institution to increase its visibility and reputation in Eastern Africa and improve collaboration and knowledge transfer between the two institutions for future activities, including research income and funding opportunities.
