Education Committee Reschedule Wajir and Nairobi Hearings on Exam Cheating
The National Assembly Committee on Education has announced that it will reschedule its hearings on allegations of widespread cheating in the 2022 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exams for Nairobi City and Wajir counties.
The committee had planned to hold the hearings in Wajir on Friday, but due to the start of the holy month of Ramadhan in the predominantly Muslim county, the hearing has been rescheduled to the following day.
The hearing for Nairobi will be on Friday, concluding the countrywide public hearings that started on March 20.
The committee has visited ten counties, including Nakuru, Nyeri, Uasin Gishu, Embu, Kakamega, Machakos, Nyamira, Mombasa, Kisumu, and Wajir.
The committee will hear presentations from Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu and Kenya National Examinations Council (Knec) CEO David Njeng’ere to explain the conduct of the KCSE examinations last year.
The MPs will recommend measures to ensure the integrity of future exams after concluding their investigations.
Many stakeholders who have appeared before the committee have alleged cheating in the examinations. Some have blamed the pressure on principals to post good results for examination irregularities.
Julius Melly, the committee chairman, stated that the committee aims to bring exam cheating to an end.
He noted an uproar across the country, with some schools having a mean score of six and shooting up all the way to ten, while others had three and got seven.
Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu and Knec CEO David Njeng’ere have maintained that the conduct and marking of the examinations were above board, even though 1,146 candidates scored grade A compared to 1,138 who attained the grade in 2021.
